Herbal medicines play a crucial role in promoting human health. Consequently, individuals are willing to put their lives at risk to gather these herbs in perilous environments and sell them at premium prices. In order to protect people’s safety, maintain market stability, and preserve ecological balance, the Guardians possess the capability of navigation, irrigation, harvesting, monitoring, alerting, and pollination.

 

What is it for?

“Tian Shan Guards” is composed of two parts: a robot and a drone.

  1. The main job of the robot is to monitor the growth of Herbal medicines through a 360-degree camera and perform maintenance or picking according to the status of the Herbs. The main methods include irrigating through watering nozzle at the bottom of the fuselage, or using soft grippers to pick them up and store them in a thermostatic box for protection and professional use.

  2. One of the tasks of the drone is detecting illegal or unprofessional picking behavior, its buzzer will be triggered to warn the pickers. At the same time, the illegal behavior will be photographed and recorded to the bass. In addition, the drone is also in charge of pollination, it sprays stored pollen through the nozzle at the bottom in areas suitable for herb growth.

 

What problem does it solve? and what's the benefit for the user?

  1. “Tian Shan Guards” replace workers in difficult terrain areas to perform tasks such as pollination, maintenance, and medicinal material picking. This not only ensures people's safety, but also promotes larger-scale cultivation of medicinal materials.

  2. 24-hour monitoring and alarming on the drone effectively improves the endangered situation of herbal medicines caused by illegal harvesting.

  3. Professional collecting and selling can ensure that the effects of herbal medicines are not destroyed and maintain the stability of the herbal medicine market.

 

Why should the jury award it?  and What makes it unique compared to similar projects?

  1. From a Creative perspective: “Guardians” combines the real needs of users with advanced science and technology, greatly improving the maintenance level and picking efficiency of wild herbs. This not only reflects the designer's emphasis on protecting the natural environment, but also expresses the designer's desire to make full use of technology to maintain market stability and ecological balance through design methods.

  2. From the perspective of Design Skills:

  1. Appearance: The Guardians's appearance adopts a bionic design. It contains four legs and one arm with a gripper. The gripper head of the robotic arm is made of soft silicone, which highly restores the texture of human hands. The color scheme and structure of the drone complement the robot. It reflects the integrity and unity of the project.

  2. Structure:

  1. Considering that the environment in which the robot works is extremely dangerous, and wild herbs are fragile and precious. Four legs of the robot's are designed in well-defined structures to help the body maintain stability.

  2. The design method of the mechanical exoskeleton increases the flexibility of the robotic arm.

  3. The gripper head is made of bionic silicone and has a detailed structure to protect the herbs from damage during the picking process. 

  4. The water tank is on the other side of the mechanical arm, which balance the weight of the robot.

  5. Binocular Camera is placed inside of the main body of the robot, which is protect by the strong cover.

  6. The battery is stored in the back to keep it from decreasing the usage in a cold enviroment.

  7. The water spray gun at the bottom of the robot and the pollination nozzle at the bottom of the drone are both retractable designs.

  8. Four sets of propollar on the drone keeps it stable and flexible.

  9. The searchlight and retractable camera on the drone are designed to be adjacent to each other to maximize the quality of the image recording.

  1. From a User Experience perspective: Workers are able to see the status and information of the herbs on the application that is designed specifically to work with Tian Shan Guards.

  2. From the perspective of Artificial Intelligence: The robot can calculate the growth of wild herbs based on the data within the system, and carry out reasonable maintenance work based on the calculation results. The drone can determine the identity of the picker through facial and body recognition, and provide warnings and reports.

 

In conclusion, effective care of wild herbs is a small step towards maintaining ecological balance. However, the influence of design is limitless. Bionic design increases the fun of products and improves user experience. The addition of artificial intelligence helps users improve the efficiency of using “Tian Shan Guards”.
